Getting Behind in Fitness?

MDi media group's offices are designed for a lot of personal engagement. It's an open space with numerous places to meet and work together—all with the intent of keeping the mind and body active through those potentially rigorous days of advertising and public relations. A recent piece on MSNBC.com, "Your Body's Big Enemy? You're Sitting On It" backs up this philosophy, citing that mankind has spent thousands of generations being engineered for a life of physical activity—and that clicking a mouse and dragging photos across an iPhone screen don't quite cut it. Elevated risks of heart disease, diabetes and depression are associated with each hour of sedentary desk-sitting, the article says.

MDi has taken even bigger strides recently to encourage its team members' mental and physical health. Trainer Richard Bonham has been engaging the group for a once-a-week boot camp as many employees are training up to participate in Mobile's First Light Marathon. Bonham leads the group through a weekly intensive which is supported through additional activities, lifestyle suggestions and catchy bits of wisdom such as his acronym on exercise:

  • E—Everyone needs mental, emotional and physical stimulation

  • X—Exclude any of these aspects of life and the individual is incomplete

  • E—Exchange sedentary lifestyle for exciting lifestyle

  • R—Resistance-train for strength

  • C—Cardio-train for powerful heart and lungs

  • I—Intensify your training to multiply your stamina

  • S—Strengthen your training to multiply your power

  • E—Exercise to release your full mental, emotional and physical potential

The way the MDi team sees it, we're all still hunters and gatherers—it's just that all this evolution requires a little planning for well-being.
